The Roots feat. John Legend – The Fire

From their very emergence, The Roots have been a standout group; aside from being a fundamentally live-instrument collective, they have been able to attract both hip hop aficionados as well as the cliche fan who “doesn’t listen to rap” but likes Game Theory.  Their latest album, How I Got Over, is another achievement from a group that has been delivering for more than 15 years.  “The Fire” is the fourth single from the album and certainly has the most engaging and confusing video that is more of a short film if anything.  According to okayplayer, the video “chronicles a post-apocalyptic death march set in 1945 during the final stages of World War II in Europe.  After a cataclysmic event renders the war futile, a paramilitary splinter group — led by a Kurtz-like figure known as The Commodore — forces the transfer of young men who will be used as labor… and food.” Enjoy, or at least be thankful that this isn’t nearly as offensive to redheads as “Born Free”.
