We Are The New Standard: C-Minus
Clement & Co. is proud to present We Are The New Standard, a series of short documentaries featuring visionaries who bring new ideas to well established mediums. In this week’s episode, we ventured over to Fat Beats in Los Angeles during Record Store Day to interview DJ/producer C-Minus.
We Are The New Standard has been around for a few months now and we’re happy to say that we’ve gained a few fans here and there over that time. To our surprise, we’ve had more than a few people request to be interviewed and even more dudes recommending others to be featured. This particular episode would not have happened had it not been for Byze One from Los Angeles, who turned us on to C-Minus’ recent production work and his importance in the development of the blending of genres during DJ sets — commonly referred to as mash-ups — an innovation that was shocking when C-Minus first debuted it, but what some have already taken for granted. Here’s what Byze wrote in his e-mail to us:
C-Minus comes from Bakersfield; we grew up together. He is 1/2 of the Almighty RuffNexx with Mr Choc and was one of the main DJ’s on Friday Nite Flavas/Fantastik 4. He was an original Power 106 mixers in the early- to mid-90s. He was the first commercial radio DJ to play Rap/Rock Collabs on a Hip-Hop Station, which is what started that entire wave of DJ’s biting his style. He is a true originator that created a new niche for DJs to not be afraid of playing more than just Hip-Hop.
He toured the world a ton of times as the DJ for the Family Values Tour, Korn, Limp, Queens & Foo Fighters. He is the sole producer for the rap group Lexicon. He is known for his Hip Hop contributions as a DJ but a lot of people haven’t heard his rock remixes and collabs. He is truly an Underground King.
And he is one of my closest and oldest friends…He Rocks.
We’d like to thank Byze One for his contribution as a Guest Curator. If any of our other readers have more suggestions, please feel free to send them to info [at] clementco.com.
