Smarter Billboards

IBM continues with their Smarter Planet campaign, “offering insights into the complex systems of the world today and how they impact our lives and businesses.”  This latest video showcases an interactive billboard that highlights the importance of a smart supply chain.  Featuring a color-sensitive camera picking up what passers-by are wearing, the billboard changes its appearance accordingly via rows of LED lights inside.  In case you missed it, the words at the bottom read: A smarter supply chain responds faster to customer preferences.

While this particular instance is targeted towards retail systems where such things as color preferences can greatly affect inventory and thus worldwide sales, this same principle is what makes those of us interested in social media tick. Interactivity and instant feedback are keystones as to what is being built and although scalability is an issue the larger a company grows, starting out with a smarter foundation is infinitely beneficial overall.  A quicker response increases retention – that’s an argument for new media / social media and why old media is scrambling to stay afloat.
