Silverlake Flea

With the weather being as nice as it was here in Southern California over the weekend, we couldn’t just sit at home on our computers.  We set out for some time outside in the sun.  Driving around LA, we happened upon the Silverlake Flea Market and decided to check it out.

Located at Micheltorena Elementary School on the corner of Micheltorena St and Sunset Blvd, the Silverlake Art, Craft and Vintage Flea Market is hard to miss.  Not only because of the colorful paintings on the walls around the area, but because of the numerous food trucks parked by the entrance.  Food trucks like Don Chow, Fresser’s, Dainty Cakes and South Philadelphia Experience were on-hand to provide patrons with their food-on-the-go goodies.  We had to get our grub on with the Grilled Cheese Truck and then succumbed to the sin of Dainty Cakes’ Bacon Bun Bites – fried bits of dough wrapped in bacon and topped with ketchup and their special sauce.  Sometimes arterial clogging is so worth it.

The flea market itself had lots of vintage clothing, jewelry and knickknacks.  What’s very key about setting up shop at Micheltorena Elementary School is all the trees around it and the shade they provide.  We love the sun, but we don’t want to be sweating up a storm whilst checking out the cool wares.

For those with young’ns in tow, this place is kid-friendly – as you might expect from the elementary school location.  In fact, there is even a vintage children’s clothing vendor at this flea market.  Furthermore, a portion of the proceeds benefits the school.

Our favorite vendor was a gap-tooth lady who made her own drawings on poster board of her favorite singers.  She complained to us about how she hated Lady Gaga and explained how she did not get her gap in her teeth fixed because it would affect her as a jazz singer.  Then she started complaining about taxes and illegal immigrants, so we had to peace out on that particular vendor.

Like any flea market, there are always pieces you keep thinking about and things you just don’t get around to fully checking out.  Maybe next time we’ll purchase one of the jazz singer’s pieces or cop that Salt-N-Pepa tape we should have bought.  If anything, we’ll definitely be back for the arteriosclerosis!
